Spiritual Warfare: Sword of the Spirit 4 (the sword)
Okay now, onto the list of verses I shared with my family member for her to use in spiritual battles, when Satan's got us down and cowering in fear. These were specifically chosen for comfort, encouragement, and strength (and I added a few extra here for different kinds of temptations or trials). I suggest printing them out, reading them over and over again, writing them out, memorizing some, taking a list with you wherever you go, etc. Whatever it takes to get through the hard times.
And when the attacks, temptations, or hard times come, turn them into prayers (I'll share my own personal Scripture-based prayers in the next post) or simply speak out loud the ones that fit your particular struggle, trial, temptation, or fear. Declare to yourself, to the struggle/temptation, and to the spirit world/the Enemy that "It is written ..." and then quote a verse that fits. And let God's Word comfort and still your soul as the sword of the Spirit fights for you.
[I really recommend memorizing these four Psalms:
1. At the very least, Psalm 23. If you only memorize one Psalm, let this be it. I can't tell you how many times I quoted this one from memory when I needed it, including when I stood in the back of a courtroom waiting to be called to the stand to testify against my mother - I spent almost three hours on the stand - at her murder trial. (She lost and got life in prison without parole, as it probably should be. Sad, but justice.)
2. Psalm 27, which is excellent but much longer. I memorized this one during the investigation for my mom's trial, when I could barely stand anymore because of the crushing anxiety. (It was also during this time that her friends and family were getting death threats and hate mail. But, thankfully, I didn't get any because I wasn't connected with her online, and so no one knew how to find me. But we were still terrified. And so we pulled our kids into the house, shut up our doors and windows, and put up blackout curtains, afraid to even walk outside to get the mail.) Anyway, if I can memorize this one when my brain was completely fried, I'm sure you can memorize it, too.
3. And Psalm 91, another long one - but so wonderful - which I memorized at the start of the covid pandemic and all the political/social craziness - which just so happened to coincide with the start of my mom's investigation and with us leaving our church of 20 years because of the Calvinism that hijacked it. (All of this happened within about 9 months. It was a really, really bad bunch of years for me. And it's a miracle that I'm still here, that my heart didn't give out.) This is a Psalm I come back to again and again!
4. And Psalm 145, which is just a great Psalm of praise! I memorized this one when things just kept getting worse and worse and my thinking was getting darker and darker, and I knew I needed to begin praising God in order to fight off the darkness that was smothering me, that was trying to take me down. (I'm gonna try to memorize Psalm 121 next. Another great one.)
(When I say I've been through a lot, I mean I've been through a lot! When I say I understand pain and anxiety, I mean I really understand pain and anxiety - incredible pain and terror-level anxiety, for far too long! And so when I say that I understand how hard the spiritual battles can be and how much we need God and His Word, I mean it. I've been there, done that, and gotten through. And so can you!)
Note: Remember that Psalms and Proverbs are songs, prayers, a heart's cries, wise sayings, and principles, not necessarily hard-core promises. They're meant to encourage, instruct, and uplift, not to build all your theological views on. I say this so that you don't claim something that's not a promise from God and then get your faith crushed when it doesn't happen.]
Exodus 14:13-14: "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."
From Exodus 20: “I am the Lord your God ... You shall have no other gods before Me.... You shall not bow down to [idols] or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God ... You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.... Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.... Honor your father and your mother ... You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house...or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
2 Kings 6:16-17 (after seeing the surrounding army) " ‘Oh, my lord, what shall we do?’ the servant asked. ’Don't be afraid,’ the prophet [Elisha] answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, ‘O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha."
2 Chronicles 14:11: “Lord, there is no one like You to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O Lord, our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this vast army. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You.”

Psalm 1: “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yield its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Not so with the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”
Psalm 3:3-8: “But you are a shield around me, O Lord; You bestow glory on me and lift up my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and He answers me from His holy hill. I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God!…. From the Lord comes deliverance. May Your blessing be on Your people.”
Psalm 4:1,8: “Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer… I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 5:1-3: “Give ear to my words, O Lord. Consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to You I pray. In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation.”
Psalm 5:11-12: “But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You. For surely, O Lord, You bless the righteous; You surround them with You favor as with a shield.”

But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for He has been good to me.”
Psalm 16:1,7-9: “Keep me safe, O God, for in You I take refuge… I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.”
Psalm 18:1-19: “I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came before Him, into His ears…. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters…. The Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me…”
Psalm 18:28-30: "You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With Your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him."
Psalm 18:31-36: “For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You give me Your shield of victory, and Your right hand sustains me; You stoop down to make me great. You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn.”
Psalm 19:1-2: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.”
Psalm 19:7-11: "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward."
Psalm 21:7: “For [I] trust in the Lord; through the unfailing love of the Most High [I] will not be shaken.”
Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalm 25:1-3: “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; in You I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one whose hope is in You will ever be put to shame…”
Psalm 25:4-5,9,12: "Show me Your ways, O Lord, teach me Your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long… He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way… Who, then, is the man that fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way chosen for him…"
Psalm 25:15-21: "My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only He will release my feet from the snare. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish. Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins... Guard my life and rescue me, let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in You. May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in You."
Psalm 27: “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple. For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at His tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord. Hear my voice when I call, O Lord; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of You, ‘Seek His face!’ Your face, Lord, I will seek. Do not hide Your face from me, do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior. Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. Teach me Your way, O Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence. I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
Psalm 30:1-2: “I will exalt You, O Lord, for You lifted me out of the depths… I called to You for help and You healed me.”
From Psalm 31: “In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in Your righteousness. Turn Your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. Since You are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of Your name lead and guide me. Free me from the trap that is set for me, for You are my refuge. Into Your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth. I hate those who cling to worthless idols; I trust in the Lord. I will be glad and rejoice in Your love, for You saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. You have not handed me over to the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place. Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak… But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me. Let Your face shine on Your servant; save me in Your unfailing love. Let me not be put to shame, O Lord, for I have cried out to You… How great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, which You bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in You. In the shelter of Your presence You hide them from the intrigues of men; in Your dwelling You keep them safe from accusing tongues. Praise be to the Lord, for He showed His wonderful love to me… In my alarm I said, 'I am cut off from Your sight!' Yet You heard my cry for mercy when I called to You for help. Love the Lord, all His saints! The Lord preserves the faithful, but the proud He pays back in full. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”
Psalm 32:5: "Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord' - and you forgave the guilt of my sin."
Psalm 32:8: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you."
Psalm 33:18-22: "The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, who hope in His unfailing love... We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May Your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You."
From Psalm 34: “I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears… The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. Fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing... The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry… The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all."
Psalm 36:5,7: “Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies… How priceless is Your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of Your wings.”
From Psalm 37: “Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when evil men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn away from wrath; do not fret – it leads only to evil. For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. A little while and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace. The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for He knows their day is coming. The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous… If the Lord delights in a man’s way, He makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand… Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake His faithful ones… The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. The law of God is in his heart; his feet do not slip… Wait for the Lord and keep His way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it… The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; He is their stronghold in time of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them, because they take refuge in Him.”
From Psalm 38: “All my longings lie open before You, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from You. My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes… I will wait for You, O Lord; You will answer me, O Lord my God… For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me… O Lord, do not forsake me; be not far off, O my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.”
From Psalm 40: “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders You have done. The things You planned for us no one can recount to You; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.… ‘I desire to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.’… Do not withhold Your mercy from me, O Lord; may Your love and Your truth always protect me. For troubles without number surround me… They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. Be pleased, O Lord, to save me; O Lord, come quickly to help me… May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, ‘The Lord be exalted!’ Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.”

Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me… But I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Psalm 57:1-3: “Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in You my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings until this disaster has passed. I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills His purpose for me. He sends from heaven and saves me... God sends His love and His faithfulness.”
Psalm 57:9-11: “I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of You among the peoples. For great is Your love, reaching to the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be over all the earth.”
Psalm 59:1,9-10,16-17: “Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me… O my strength, I watch for You; You, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress… Be not far from me, O God; come quickly, O my God, to help me.”
Psalm 71:14-15,19-21: “But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise You more and more. My mouth will tell of Your righteousness, of Your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure… Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You? Though You have made me see troubles, many and bitter, You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth You will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again.”

Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that His glory may dwell in our land.”
Psalm 86: “Hear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my life, for I am devoted to You. You are my God; save Your servant who trusts in You. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to You all day long. Bring joy to Your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to You. Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. In the day of my trouble I will call to You, for You will answer me. Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; no deeds can compare with Yours. All the nations You have made will come and worship before You, O Lord; they will bring glory to Your name. For You are great and do marvelous deeds; You alone are God. Teach me Your way, O Lord, and I will walk in Your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name. I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever. For great is Your love toward me; You have delivered me from the depths of the grave. The arrogant are attacking me, O God; a band of ruthless men seeks my life – men without regard for You. But You, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant Your strength to Your servant and save Your faithful servant. Give me a sign of Your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for You, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.”
Psalm 91: "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.' Surely He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you make the Most High your dwelling - even the Lord, who is my refuge - then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lions and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 'Because he loves Me,' says the Lord, 'I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name. He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My salvation.'"

Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with the trouble their lips have caused. Let the burning coals fall upon them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. But my eyes are fixed on You, O Sovereign Lord; in You I take refuge - do not give me over to death. Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, from the traps set by evildoers. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life. I cry to You, O Lord; I say, 'You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.' Listen to my cry for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. Set me free from my prison, that I may praise Your name."

I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all Your works and consider what Your hands have done. I spread out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a parched land. Answer me quickly, O Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul. Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord, for I hide myself in You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may Your good Spirit lead me on level ground. They will speak of the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and I will meditate on Your wonderful works. They will tell of the power of Your awesome works, and I will proclaim Your great deeds. They will celebrate Your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of Your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made. All You have made will praise You, O Lord; Your saints will extol You. The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them – the Lord, who remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but He frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.”
