Not such an old fuddy-duddy now, am I!

"I have no clue what you're talking about."

The other day, I told my sons that if they can't find the official "doggie bags," they can use plastic grocery-store bags (we have an over-abundance of them) to clean up after our dog on walks.   In response, my 13-year-old son delighted to inform me that "Mom, if you use a Walmart bag to clean up dog poop on the side of the road, you'll look like a crazy lady.  Especially with the kind of hair you have." More Creation Videos We Watched

A couple good videos my kids and I just watched as part of our homeschooling day: Did Dinosaurs Walk With Man  - a 45-minute seminar from Genesis Apologetics God of Wonders - an hour and a half "documentary" on the wonders of the God's creation (Also see this other post of mine for more creation videos we watched: Starting the new school year with Creation vs Evolution .)

Life as a Mom

Image
My sons, two minutes after breakfast ...                                      When I come out of the bathroom after being in there for exactly 21 seconds ...             Two minutes after lunch ...                         The minute the kids realize I am on the phone ...               Every day, even all winter ...                                                                                                         Dinnertime ...   Every!  Single!  Night! There...

Giggle Translate #15: Some Mom Advice

Image
Some of my  "advice for moms"  after it's been run through many different languages with Google Translate  [Any comments I make about the translation will be in brackets and in blue] : 1. Original Version : It is perfectly acceptable to start crying over seemingly small things because you are so sleep-deprived that you can’t think straight.    If you have to change the baby’s outfit  again  because they got some kind of body fluid on it  again,  go ahead and cry.    If you just dropped the paper towel for the third time because you are too tired and weak to keep a grip on it, let the tears roll.    Or if all of your children have taken up the tribal chant of “Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom” at the same time, but no one can hear your small, pathetic plea to stop talking because your head is about to explode, then curl up the fetal position in the corner of the room and sob.    That’s not being too emotional; that’s being smar...

I Just Want to Finish Well! (repost)

(Reposted from a few years ago.)   Once again, I found myself in a small funk last month, feeling like I can’t accomplish anything.   Can’t give any one thing the effort and time it needs.   I am so stretched-thin in places.   The housework never gets done.   The construction never gets done.   There’s not enough money to fix this place up.   My cooking has seen better days.   There’s not enough time to do everything I want when it comes to homeschooling, so, of course, my boys are going to grow up to be great big drains on society.   I was feeling a little panicked that things were slipping away from me too fast, that I couldn’t get a grip on anything.   And then I picked up a movie from the library that really settled my heart:   Flywheel .   It’s an older one, the first one done by the people who made Courageous and Facing the Giants .   And I have to say that... it... is... good!   It’s really good, even i...

"Should Christians Watch Horror Movies?"

[This used to be a link to take you to the earlier post I wrote about this, but I replaced it with the actual post itself to make it easier for you.] I visited a Christian blog recently where the author shared a list of her favorite scary movies to watch on Halloween.  And they were some of the worst of the worst.  Violent, demonic, evil.  And she said that she's happy her kids are old enough to watch them now so that they can watch the movies together.  (I'm not sure how old her kids are, but she is not an old, grandma-aged mom.) I was horrified.  And I told her in the comment section that I was shocked that a Christian website would encourage those kinds of movies.  I told her that I didn't think it's right to encourage things that are clearly contrary to God.  (For the record, I used to love scary movies ... until I found myself home alone, remembering the terrifying images of these movies.)   In response, she told me that she knows Christians ...

Our Very Own Groundhog Day

You know that movie, Groundhog Day , where Bill Murray lives the same day over and over and over again. Doesn't seem so unrealistic now, does it!?! I tell ya, I'm having a hard time knowing what day it is anymore because every day feels exactly the same, same kinds of news headlines, same four walls, same people I see every day, nowhere else to go and nothing else to do but isolate ourselves at home, cook, clean, read, watch TV, and do schooling.   And then we wake up and do it all over again. But remember this: While you can't choose the hand you're dealt in life, you can choose how to play your cards.  So make the most of your monotonous days, lighten up as much as you can, find something new to learn or something productive to do, keep a sense of humor, and sing out loud.  Just for the heck of it!   When you feel the least like singing is when you need to the most.  So just for fun, because no one ever said that living Groundhog's Day over and over ...

What I Stocked Up On, in case of Lockdown or Quarantine (with recipes)

Image
I know this doesn't fit with a "faith" blog, but go with me here.  Everything's wonky anyway.  (The memes are from here .) This is some of what I stocked up on (with a few recipes at the end) as the Coronavirus panic took hold of our country.  I made sure to only buy what I knew we would use up by the expiration dates, and I spread it out over several shopping trips.  I'm not stocking up out of concern that we'll be on lockdown or quarantined.  (We're homeschooling homebodies anyway, so as long we don't get the virus, we'll be fine.  Which is good, because - surprise! - we just got put on lockdown.)  I'm stocking up more out of concern that this will have economic repercussions, affecting the country's future food supply.  Maybe not huge repercussions, but ones that will make us realize how much we took for granted before.  (My bedroom looks more like a fall-out shelter, full of food and supplies.)   My focus is on basic, s...
